Heart Health and Mature Men: Why Monitoring Blood Pressure Matters

As we mature, we carry stories in our hearts—of love, resilience, triumphs, and challenges. But for mature gay men of color, there’s often an added layer: the stress that comes from navigating life in a world that doesn’t always embrace who we are. This constant pressure can quietly take a toll on our heart health.

High blood pressure (or hypertension) is one of the most common and silent health threats for men, especially Black and Latino men, who statistically face higher risks. It’s called the “silent killer” for a reason—there are usually no warning signs until it’s too late. Left unchecked, it can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and more.

According to the CDC, nearly half of adults in the U.S. (about 116 million people) have high blood pressure—and many don’t know it. For Black men in particular, hypertension often develops earlier and is more severe.

But here’s the thing: knowledge is power. Regular blood pressure checks are simple, painless, and lifesaving. Pair that with healthier habits like reducing salt, managing stress, staying active, and showing up for yourself the way you show up for others.

Your life, your legacy, your love—it all matters.

Take a moment for your heart today.
Get your blood pressure checked, and encourage the brothers and friends in your circle to do the same. Because loving yourself means taking care of yourself.
